Mt. Rainier
I love this painting, mostly because it looks like what I actually saw that day from Whidbey Island. I was visiting there last summer and this image is one of the most notable and recognizable views from the Seattle, Washington area. Such a magnificent volcano… which is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This piece invites you to step back from the canvas, to see how those loose brush strokes rendered a scene that’s so well-known just by its form. The colors of my palette further helped me to render the distinct aspects of the view: lighter blues in the sky, white with shades of blues and grays helping to convey the dance of light and shadow on the mountain, so stark against that sky, a delineating dark row of features we know is the shoreline with its buildings and trees, with darker blue and blacks below, delivering the sense of drama so present in water with waves. I feel incredibly pleased to have been able to capture in oil the imagery that comes to mind each time I recall the trip.
