Seaside Guardian
It was fun to paint this laughing gull with its winter plume. My friend Jeffery Dunn in Daytona Beach snapped this photo. I just had to paint it. The expression of the eyes captivated me, as did the colors of the winter feathers. Can you imagine how many hues of oil paint were needed to render the shades of the plumage? White, shades of gray, browns… it’s all in there and helps give depth and hint at the way light and shadows play on a surface. And this gull, most certainly standing guard, became even more real to me as each stroke rendered that light. I hope you’ll enjoy this one as much as I do.
